Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA)

One of the most popular groups of acids used for cosmetic purposes are alpha hydroxy acids, commonly known as AHA acids. They are often referred to as fruit acids, as they are most commonly derived from fruits.

The most well-known types of AHA acids are: glycolic, lactic, malic, citric, tartaric, and mandelic (almond) acid. They all have the ability to exfoliate, removing dead skin cells. In this way, they improve the overall appearance and health of the skin, giving the face freshness and radiance. These acids are used for chemical peels, treatments that even out skin tone, reduce hyperpigmentation spots, and smooth skin texture. Although it is a very powerful cosmetic ingredient, they should be used carefully because alpha-hydroxy acids are photo-sensitive ingredients.
