Most of the blondes have met with the problem of unwanted yellow tones on their hair. One of the solutions is the hair tint against yellow tones. Find out how to make it yourself.
Why Do Unwanted Yellow Tones Appear
Whether your hair coloring in blonde is done on your own, or that job is left to professionals, nevertheless, unwanted yellow tones can appear on your hair. This usually happens immediately after dyeing or after several washes.
To avoid this phenomenon and get a darker shade than desired, pay attention to your natural hair before changing the color. What color is it, what is the pigment and reflection? In order not to be unpleasantly surprised by the results after coloring, it is important to be aware of the characteristics of your hair.
To what extent the hair will be blonde after coloring, depends on many factors. The first and very important is the pigment of your hair. If you cannot determine it precisely, consult your hairdresser. Depending on the pigment, some hair will also need to be bleached, because the dye itself is not sufficient to “extract the color”. To get beautiful blonde hair, the red pigment is the most problematic one. This is exactly what people from our region usually have.
Another important factor is the hair color. Your natural color can make the dyeing process much easier or more difficult. The lighter the hair, the lighter and more beautiful shade of blonde you will get, while the process of coloring in blonde is much more difficult with naturally black hair. For natural blondes, only a quality dye with a platinum shade is enough to get the desired tone. To lighten dark hair, it is necessary to use bleach first. However, with naturally dark hair, especially those with red pigment, there is a possibility of getting unwanted brassy yellow tones. That is why an anti-yellow hair tint comes into play.
The third, also very important characteristic, is the condition and quality of the hair. Dyeing healthy hair gives the best results, and in order for your hair to be healthy, it needs regular and proper care.
Is There a Way to Prevent the Appearance of Unwanted Brassy Tones
If you dye your hair at home, choose better quality colors which have a better covering power. If you leave hair coloring to hairdressers, check which dyes they use. If you are not sure about their choice, and you are not skilled enough to dye yourself, make sure that you are allowed to bring your own color to that salon.
When choosing a hair dye, it is important to take into account several things. Each color has its own hue and tone. The hue determines the color, that is, how dark or light it will be, while the tone defines what reflection the hair will have. When buying color, pay special attention to the tone, because it is crucial when you dye your hair blonde. Read the text “How to choose the right hair dye” and when buying, pay less attention to the packaging design itself, and more to the composition and numbers that define the color. The first number on the package (in front of the dot or line) indicates the hue, while the second number (behind the dot or line) indicates the tone. See in the table what exactly which number represents.
First number on the package indicates the hues: | Second number on the package indicates tones: | ||
1 | black hue | 0 | natural tone |
2 | the darkest brown hue | 1 | ash tone |
3 | dark brown hue | 2 | violet tone |
4 | medium brown hue | 3 | golden tone |
5 | light brown hue | 4 | copper tone |
6 | dark blonde hue | 5 | red tone |
7 | medium blonde hue | 6 | mahogany tone |
8 | light blonde hue | 7 | tobacco tone |
9 | the lightest blonde hue | 8 | pearl tone |
10-12 | extra light and special blonde hues | 9 | beige tone |
Sometimes choosing the right hair dye is not enough. That is why there are additives that are used as concealers and toners to neutralize unwanted tone. They can also improve the intensity and shine of the color, and provide better coverage of gray hair. These preparations are added directly to the dye, in order to avoid the appearance of unwanted tones during coloring. They can be mixed with all hair colors. No additional skills or knowledge are required to apply these products. It is enough to mix the contents of the bag with the dye (and hydrogen).
ARDELL Color Solutions Unred is used as a corrector to reduce and eliminate red and orange tones. It also slows down and makes it harder to wash off the dye after coloring.
ARDELL Color Solutions Red Gold Corrector Plus is added to colors to neutralize copper and gold tones. At the same time, the additive enhances the shine of the dye and makes it last longer.
What Is the Hair Tint
Even if you choose a good color, if you have an extremely strong red or orange pigment, it can happen that instead of pearl blonde, you get yellow hair. Hair tint is the first aid in removing unwanted tones after coloring. It cannot lighten the hair hue, but only change and correct the color tone, neutralizing the yellow and orange tones on the hair. It can correct minor color irregularities, refresh and restore hair color between two dyes.
Brunettes and black-haired often use tints to restore color along the entire length. In that way, the color is refreshed, and the hair looks more natural and stays shiny until the next regular coloring. Also, the tint can be used to dye growths, if you do not change the hue by more than one tone and you do not have gray hair. If you use shampoos for colored hair, the results of coloring with a tint can last up to four weeks. On bleached blonde hair, the tint can be used to get ashy, pink or purple hair.
The anti-yellow hair tint is intended to neutralize unwanted yellow tones. For that purpose, ash, pearl and purple hues of tint are used.
Tints are available on the market as a finished product, based on ammonia, but you can very easily make them yourself at home and adjust them to the desired tone.
How To Make the Hair Tint from Dye
Although they exist as separate products, tints, due to their composition, are not suitable for the frequent use. That is why we suggest you to make them yourself with the help of color. There are several ways. We present the two fastest and easiest to be made and implemented.
Tint for Wet Hair
For this tint you need:
- Hair dye;
- Hydrogen 6%;
- Shampoo;
- Water in a small amount (about 10 ml).
Mix equal amounts of the first three ingredients and add a little water, so that the mixture is not too thick. This tint is applied and rubbed on wet hair, which you previously washed with a shampoo, to open the hair cuticle. It is necessary to leave it to act for a while (5-30 minutes, depending on the hair color and the results you want to achieve).
Tint for Wet or Dry Hair
This tint is made in a similar way as the previous one, but it can also be used on dry hair. It is necessary to mix equal amounts:
- Hair dye and
- Hydrogen 3%.
This hair tint is not diluted with water or a shampoo. It is applied to the entire length of the hair or just to the growth and left to act. The optimal time is 15-20 minutes, and if necessary, it is allowed to leave it to act longer or shorter than that. 5-10 minutes is often enough to cover the growth with natural blondes, while brunettes and black-haired people can “hold” the tint for up to 30 minutes.
Anti-Yellow Hair Tint
Gray hair tint can neutralize and correct the tone without further lightening. In addition to removing yellow tones, it improves the shine and appearance of hair.
Anti-yellow hair tint is made in the same way as any other. It is important to take care of the hue and tone of the color you use. In order for the results to be successful, you need a basic knowledge of the color laws and how they neutralize each other. The best neutralization of tones is achieved by using the opposite color. Remember the spectrum of colors in the shape of a circle: opposite to yellow is purple. So, for the opposite effect of yellow, use a purple hair tint.
If you want to neutralize orange-red and reddish tones, choose a greenish or bluish tint. To remove yellowness, choose colors with purple, ash and pearl shine, because they will give your hair a cool tone.
Products to Neutralize Yellow Tones
Anti-yellow hair tint is just one method for removing unwanted tones on blonde hair. Today, there are other, simpler ways. If you have not already used the tints, the preparation procedure itself, the method of application, and the time it takes to get the results – can be repulsive.
The simplest option is to use ready-made anti-yellow hair care products. Shampoos, masks, balms and other preparations that neutralize unwanted tones after coloring are becoming increasingly popular. They are easy to use and give effective results. Do not be surprised by their color, because that is exactly the trick. The purple pigment in these products neutralizes the yellow shades on blonde, gray and the hair with strands.
